t.sheely@sbcglobal.net Lawrence Retired Married 3 2 1 We will miss the reunion as we will be in Santa Fe NM in route to the Grand Canyon. I hope that everyone stays well and has a real “hoot” at the parties

And now for 50 years of activities and remembrances. That is a challenge……so here is the short version.

KU grad --- class of ‘71 with majors in Anthropology and Geography.

Served for three years in the oxymoron named Army Intelligence. This turned out to be a great three year stint being stationed in Baltimore MD for training and then New York City, Boston, back to NYC and then a year in Korea. Absolutely interesting every day working as a Special Agent and a great way to tour the east coast and SE Asia. (The scary part was running around with a 45 under my suit jacket!) Had a wonderful two week leave exploring Japan.

While in school I worked at and then managed The Stables , a KU and Lawrence tradition now long gone.

Toured Europe for the summer between graduation and post grad work, picking up my first BMW at the Munich factory.

Spent three years at Jack Henry’s in store management and buying but I found retail was really boring.

Then the move to ATT/Southwestern Bell/SBC/ATT for what turned out to be a 30 year sales career in the Yellow Pages working in the Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka and Lawrence offices. The company certainly had its ups and downs with many corporate changes but generally the work was rewarding both personally and financially.

At the ripe age of 37 I finally met my true love and married Lynn . Lynn’s daughter Jamie was six at the time so I had an instant family. Then came Daniel and Beth. Jamie is now a high school guidance counselor and has two daughters, Daniel a teacher and Beth is an ER nurse and Life Team helicopter flight nurse. While the kids were growing up we camped and canoed a lot. We have now been married for 31 years.

Our first ten years together we lived in the old Southwest area at 10 East Winthrope Rd. We moved to Lawrence 22 years ago and can not even dream of moving back into the city.

In Lawrence I became active again in Boy Scouts and find myself still volunteering in several positions from the troop to the council Board of Directors. I return each summer to the Bartle Scout Reservation (Camp Osceola). Have also been to Philmont three times. One of the most rewarding jobs was the four years serving as the Camp Director at our Rotary Camp for Scouts with Disabilities in Lees‘s Summit MO.

Lynn and I retired at about the same time. We have been enjoying the grand kids, gardening, traveling in our RV, kayaking and biking and doing church, community and theater volunteer work.

McKinney TX retired Married 1 After graduating from MU, I spent most of my early working years selling local radio and television advertising. Over the following 15 years, I held advertising, marketing and marketing research positions with three fast food companies and a marketing consulting firm. This career activity produced a great deal of travel and many home moves.
In 1993, I began operating a home cleaning franchise which was sold back to the franchisor seven years later for what was, I promise, a modest sum. And until retirement in 2008, I was employed by a private, non-profit mental health organization to do crisis intervention and prevention for their medication resistant clients in Dallas County.
This is my 24th year as a member of a national auto racing club, having participated in their amateur road racing and autocross events with a formula car. I have also been a collector of uncommon percussion musical instruments and the percussive sounds they make. Some of these sounds are more pleasant than others. A select few having proven themselves lethal to otherwise hardy indoor cactus plants, I now keep a watchful eye on wallpaper and glassware.
One other item. During high school my social life seemed to be in total eclipse. Shortly after graduation, however, I learned that the North Door did not face the track field. Of course by then it was too late to remedy the situation. Nevertheless, I was later advised that it wouldn't have mattered really where I hung out. Maybe so. But, I've gotten a lot better. At least with my south and my west directions.

Gladstone MO Married 6 8 1 Fifty is a very special number. Not only did I leave Southwest 50 years ago, I, too, married Paul Boyd 50 years ago!
During most of those fifty years, we lived in Lathrop, MO ("the Mule Capital of the World") while rearing 6 children and, more recently, enjoying our 8 grandchildren. Along with child-rearing as a stay-at-home mom, I volunteered at the school library for many years and helped out with school music programs. I, too, volunteered at the Lathrop Nursing Home and I also volunteered at the Antique Show Ground in Lathrop -- which, by the way, was held in a building divided into a one-room church and a one-room school.
We now live in Gladstone and I would really enjoy hearing from my Southwest friends!

shrago@mindspring.com Marietta GA Retired Married 1 None, yet. 2 I went to Grinnell College for a B.A. and Vanderbilt University for an M.A. and ABD (all but dissertation). I went to work at the Tennessee State Planning Office with the intention to work on the dissertation at night. I may start it some day.

The state position led me into the health care field, and four lengthy gigs constitute the bulk of my work time, and a career. The gigs have included health planning and development, hospital system finance and planning, managed care development and provider contracting, and business and operational consulting for medical practices. Note that, at no time, did I ever directly provide any patient care services, so I’m comfortable that no serious harm was done by all this. I retired to part time status in January ’09 and the rest of the way in September ’10. Figuring out what to do now is an ongoing task, but one I like.

The first of the health gigs took me to Chattanooga, where I met, hired and then married Marsha. We’ve been together for nearly 34 years now. I know I chose well; I trust she feels the same. We’ve lived most of the time in Marietta, GA (an Atlanta suburb) and are pretty much settled in. Our son Eric is now 31, lives in Manhattan, and works on Wall Street (the state of mind, not the location.) We like and admire him greatly and enjoy his company however and whenever we have the chance.

For the last 25 years, Marsha has been in her chosen field of math education, first as a high school teacher and, for the last 6 years, as a Teacher Educator at Georgia Tech. She will retire in July.

cland@datasmithpayroll.com Overland Park KS RETIRED Married 2 1 Recently retired from Sherwin-Williams (103rd State Line). It was fun working at that location cuz lots of people from the past came in: grade school, high school, Baker U., neighbors, etc. Like ole home week.
Mostly good memories:
Teepee town, petticoats, orange-dyed tennis shoes, sorority, friends.
Fifty years ago we graduated from the primo school in the area.  It saddens me to see what has been happening to SW in the last few years.  I hope someone can bring it back into its glory days.

rxburt@kc.rr.com Leawood KS Pharmacist Married 2 4 1 Started college at KU and ended at UMKC School of Pharmacy. Took time off to do active duty in USAR 325th General Hospital. I have worked as a retail pharmacist since 1971. Was Adjunct Professor of Pharmacy for three years at UMKC and now work for Prescription Solutions (we fill AARP prescriptions). Now just go to work, take time off, and play with grand kids. I am now fully retired, and have time to bother my sons one an attorney in Columbia Mo., and the other in Ft. Myers Fl. who is now a financial adviser. His former job was a TV sports caster, and Sports Anchor for WINK in Ft. Myers. Hope to see everyone at the reunion Getting my diploma from Mr Cannon and seeing the look of astonishment on his face. Worst was having to sit through the hot days in uncomfortable class rooms.
Helping Barbara and McKay and all the others in putting together this reunion is a great feeling, reaching out and touching the past keeps me grounded.  Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

rluban@roadrunner.com Santa Monica CA Real Estate Broker Divorced 2 1 1 College at USC in LA, CA. Social worker in NJ where I was married & had 2 amazing sons. Divorced and returned to CA, went into private practice (psychology). Raised my sons during the 80's in Ashland, Oregon where I was also in priv practice, ran marathons, etc. Returned to CA, first Laguna Bch, then Santa Monica where I'll remain forever, I think. After 30 yrs of sitting in people's pain, writing a couple of books, and doing a lot of traveling for work, I switched careers to real estate (which I'd always done on the side, but not for other people). I'm a tennis junkie (have played competitive singles for 35+ yrs, nearly daily), love the arts, beach, my adorable 2 y/o granddaughter, and my sweet sons (both health professionals, one an acupuncturist, the other a physical therapist). Have been very lucky to be healthy all this time. I cannot believe it's been 50 yrs since h.s. I'm in denial. Best was pal-ing around with Barbara and Judy, laughing with Patty at Ms. McLeod's French class and club, and working 3 jobs to save the $$ necessary to get outa' KC. Worst: marking time til I could get out of KC. My sons surprised me on my 60th with a "roots trip" back to KC, the Plaza, etc. and I appreciated KC more than during those h.s. days, but truthfully, CA is my habitat.
Oh all right, Barbara...pushy-pushy!!!
